Why are location permissions important?

Your privacy is important to us. Breadcrumb has been designed and built in a way that it can't track or follow the movement of users.

Below provides explanations to the important questions relating to location & settings, data, battery and privacy, and what can change when a device's location is disabled.

Which tools need access to my phone's location?

Only some of of the check in and check out features.

Enabling location services means you can efficiently and effectively check in to your projects, skip the kiosk queues, quickly complete site documentation and get on the tools sooner.

  • In App Check-in. When you tap check-In from the mobile phone app, Breadcrumb provides a list of nearby sites for you to select from
  • Automatic check-in and check-out. After your first manual/self check-in on the site, the Breadcrumb phone app can automatically check you in or out when you enter and exit the sites geofence.

Your site team relies on accurate attendance records to know who's on site, for things like emergencies and evacuations.

Is Breadcrumb tracking me?

No. Breadcrumb is only activated or triggered awake when it is within close proximity to a site's geofence. It only records when a phone has completed a check in or check out. It is not a location based service which requires continuous streamining (like Google Maps, Uber).

Location specific coordinates are not sent to Breadcrumb, and the simple string of text that is shared, is only after the phone's built in sensors confirm you have entered or exited the site.

But how does this work day to day?

1. Your phone enters or exits a virtual boundary (the site's geofence)

2. The Breadcrumb phone app either 'wakes up' and checks you in/out or, it goes back to sleep and does nothing more.

What location data is shared with Breadcrumb?

A short string of text will be shared to Breadcrumb after completing a check in and check out.

Only the relevant and necessary information is shared, and none of your phone's specific location information:

  • The name of the site your phone checked in or out of
  • The date and time your phone checked in or out of a site
  • Your name is registered on the site's attendance records

Additional questions may be asked and responses submitted as required by the Head Contractor/Company by way of questions, induction forms and site safety documentation.

Why does the app ask for location "Always allow" or "All the time"?

Think of "Always allow" or "All the time" as a way of keeping Breadcrumb in the background, and only waking up when the phone's sensors recognises it's moved in or out of a geofence.

When location is set to "Never allow", the app is shut down as soon as you close or lock your phone. You can trigger a check in or out event manually opening the app and tap check in, or scan a qr code.

Enable or disable auto check-in/out permissions.

Do I have to turn location on?

Your location permissions are your choice. Just remember - some check in methods require location permissions to work as expected.

Some of the other ways you can check in are:

  • Scanning the site QR code
  • Using a site kiosk
  • Asking your Site Manager to check you in

Be sure to check which is the preferred method with your Head Contractor/Company.

See the complete list of check in methods here: Explained: the different check-in methods for all the options.

Will it drain my battery?

Automatic check-in and running Breadcrumb in the background requires minimal battery. See which apps are using a higher level of phone battery in the phone's settings.

Why did my check-in show the wrong location?

Sometimes the phone's location accuracy can be inaccurate.

Regularly changing the phone's permissions and settings can change how the app works. Other things that can affect location accuracy are:

  • The age of the phone: older phones are built with old tech which don't support today's apps and processing required

  • Damage to phone: this reduces the capability of the tech significantly

  • Cheap phones: designed and built using lesser quality tech which may not be able to support the app

  • Location of the site: dense tall buildings create a cannyoning affect and prohibit GPS/WiFi signals, heavy tree cover or weak signals make it difficult for the app to perfom and remote or regional sites with no signal.

These are some ways you can ensure your phone will work as expected:

  • Keep your phone's operating system up to date
  • Check the Breadcrumb app is set to "Always allow" in location permissions
  • Make sure you have mobile reception, or add Starlink
  • Get a clear view of the sky if you can

You can open a maps app anytime and check if it shows your pin is in your exact spot.  If it doesn't, Breadcrumb won't either.

How do I turn automatic check-in off?

1. In the Breadcrumb mobile phone app, go to Settings > Attendance, and

2. Turn off automated attendance.

You can also view, disable or delete the connection to geofences for other sites you've checked into previously.

If you choose to remove location access entirely in your phone's settings, manual check-in methods (like scanning the QR code), will become your ideal way of checking in.
