How do I check in using my location?

Using GPS-based check-in where available instead of scanning a QR code.

If location services are turned on, the Breadcrumb app can find the site you're standing on, so you don't need to scan a QR code. On some sites, it can also check you in and out automatically as you arrive and leave.

Before you start

  • Turn on location services on your phone, and allow the Breadcrumb app to use your location.
  • Be on site: The app uses your location to find the sites closest to you, and some sites require you to be within the site boundary to check in.

Check in using your location

  1. Open the Breadcrumb app and tap Check-In on your profile screen.
  2. Choose your site from the list. Sites near you appear at the top.
  3. Tap Confirm.
  4. Follow the prompts, such as your site induction or any documents to sign.
  5. Tap Check-in to finish.

Automatic check-in and check-out

Some sites let the app check you in and out automatically. After your first manual check-in to a site, the app can recognise when you arrive and leave.

For this to work reliably, set the Breadcrumb app's location permission to Always in your phone settings. If it's set to While Using, the app can't tell when you've arrived or left.

Even with automatic check-in, you may still need to open the app to finish anything outstanding, such as answering check-in questions or signing a briefing.

Your privacy

Breadcrumb doesn't track or follow you on or off site. The app only sends your location when you check in or out, to confirm you're at the site. You can change the app's location permission at any time in your phone settings.

Site not showing up?

  • Check location is on: Make sure location services are turned on and Breadcrumb has permission to use them.
  • Move closer: You may be outside the site boundary, for example in a car park next door. Try again from inside the site.
  • Scan the QR code instead: If the site still doesn't appear, scan the Breadcrumb QR code at the site entrance.
