How do I apply for a permit?

Submitting a permit application, such as hot works or confined space, from the app.

Before you start high-risk work on site, such as hot works, working in a confined space or working at heights, you may need a permit. You apply for it in the Breadcrumb app, and the site team reviews it before you can start.

Before you start

  • Be checked in: You need to be checked in to the site to apply.
  • Permits must be set up for the site: If you don't see the permit you need, ask the site team.
  • Apply early: Leave time for the site team to review your permit before the work is due to start.

Apply for a permit

  1. Open the Breadcrumb app and check in to the site.
  2. Tap the Permit tile.
  3. Choose the type of permit you need, for example Hot Works.
  4. Fill in the permit details:
    • Submit for: Choose whether the permit is just for you, or for your company.
    • Permit Period: The dates you need the permit to be active.
    • According to Schedule: The times of day you'll be using the permit.
  5. Answer the permit questions, such as the work you're doing, the hazards and the controls you'll put in place. Add photos if asked.
  6. Tap Submit.

What happens next

Your permit shows as pending while the site team reviews it. You'll get a notification in the app once it's been reviewed.

  • Approved: You can see your permit in the Permit tile. Depending on the site, it'll be open and ready to use, or on hold until you open it.
  • Rejected: You'll need to submit a new permit application. Check with the site team about what needs to change.

Using your permit

  • Open it when you start work: If your permit is on hold, open it from the Permit tile when you start the work. You may be asked a few questions first, such as confirming a fire extinguisher is nearby.
  • Put it on hold when you stop: At the end of the day, or when the work is finished, put the permit on hold. You may be asked to confirm the area is safe.
  • The site team closes it: Once the work is complete, the site team checks the area and closes the permit.

Good to know

  • Don't start work until it's approved: A pending permit doesn't cover you to start the work.
  • Closed permits can't be reopened: If you need to do more work after a permit is closed, apply for a new one.
