General troubleshooting: Why is my Breadcrumb app not working?

A troubleshooting guide covering the most common reasons the app won't load or work properly, and the steps to resolve them.

If Breadcrumb won't load, keeps freezing or won't let you check in, the fix is usually quick. Start with the basics below, then jump to the section that matches what's happening.

Try these first

  1. Update the app. Check the App Store or Google Play for a newer version of Breadcrumb.
  2. Close and reopen the app. Fully close it, not just switch away, then open it again.
  3. Restart your phone.
  4. Check your connection. Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or move somewhere with better reception.

Still not working? Find your problem below.

The app won't load or is very slow

Is your phone up to date?

Breadcrumb supports the latest version of iOS and Android, plus the version before it. On iPhone, you'll need iOS 16 or later. If your phone can't update to a supported version, the app may not work properly. It would then be best recommended to use web.1bc.app if you are unable to update.

Is your connection strong enough?

Breadcrumb needs a steady connection. Weak reception on site is one of the most common causes of slow loading. If you're struggling:

  • move closer to the site office or somewhere with better reception
  • connect to site Wi-Fi if there is one
  • ask the site team if there's a kiosk you can check in on instead
  • ask a site host to check you in from their device

Using a work phone?

Some company phones have security settings that block apps from installing or working properly. If that's the case, try Breadcrumb in your web browser at web.1bc.app, or use a different phone. Your IT team may also be able to allow the app.

I'm not getting my verification code

When you sign up or log in, we send a code to your mobile by SMS. If it doesn't arrive:

  • Check your number. Make sure you've entered the right mobile number, including the correct country.
  • Check your reception. You'll need enough signal to receive a text.
  • Wait a minute, then request a new code. Texts can sometimes be delayed.
  • Use a mobile number with a SIM card. Internet-based numbers, such as some VoIP or app-based numbers, may not receive codes.

If you still don't get a code, ask a site host to check you in so you can get to work, then contact our Support team with the details listed at the bottom of this page.

I can't find the site to check in

The app uses your location to show sites near you. If the site isn't showing up:

  • Turn on location services for Breadcrumb in your phone's settings.
  • Turn off low power or battery saver mode. This can stop your phone sharing its location.
  • Scan the site QR code at the gate or site office instead. This takes you straight to the right site.

If it's still not showing, let the site team know. They may need to check the site's settings.

Using Breadcrumb on a computer?

  • Use a supported browser: Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Safari, updated in the last six months.
  • Don't use private or incognito mode. Breadcrumb won't load in a private browsing window. Open a normal window instead.
  • Check your internet. If the site is slow, try a wired connection or ask your IT team to check your network.
